Voter ID – what you need to know

Essentially this will apply to all elections.

From 4 May 2023, people who wish to vote in person (including those acting as a proxy), will be required to produce an accepted form of photographic ID to prove their identity before they will be issued with a ballot paper.

Photo identification includes; Passport, Driving Licnece, Blue Badge, and Older Persons Travel Pass (the full list can be found on this link: https://www.solihull.gov.uk/voterid ).

If you do not have an acceoted form of photo ID you can apply for a free voter ID document, known as a Voter Authority Certificate, if:

  • you don’t have an accepted form of photo ID
  • you’re not sure whether your photo ID still looks like you
  • you’re worried about using an existing form of ID for any other reason, such as the use of a gender marker

You will be able to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate at voter-authority-certificate.service.gov.uk/.

I appreciate this might be a hassle to some but there have been many reports or suspicion of electoral fraud. I do recognise there is some political oppostion to this but even so all political parties (I know of) have the requirement of having photo ID for those attending at party conferences/meetings.
