Solihull Town Centre’s Low Carbon Energy Network –

Abridged from the councils press release earlier today:

The council has a partnership with Vital Energi to develop our Carbon Energy Network.

The new energy network will generate low carbon heat and power (electricity) from a single energy centre and distribute it directly into town centre buildings via a system of underground pipes and cables. The Energy Centre will be built on land next to Tudor Grange Leisure Centre and will house a range of renewable and low carbon energy solutions including Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP).

This scheme forms part of a wider strategic approach Solihull Council is developing to decarbonise the borough over the next 20 years.

Utilising low carbon solutions, including Air Source Heat Pumps, the energy will be generated at a centralised new Energy Centre, located next to Tudor Grange Leisure Centre Car Park, and distributed to individual buildings via a system of underground pipes and cables.

This ambitious scheme is will deliver significant carbon savings while helping to reduce fuel bills and future-proof business and consumer energy needs.

As one of the councils representatives on the board, together with Cllr Andy Mackiewicz, I really look forward to this. As Andy says ‘The town centre energy network will be the first of its kind in Solihull and will hopefully pave the way for similar projects around the borough.’
