The Met Office has some excellent advice for travel during winter. Yes, some may say ‘its teaching us to suck eggs’ but it is very easy to be caught out, whether on long or short journeys.

The advice can be found on their website: https://weather.metoffice.gov.uk/warnings-and-advice/seasonal-advice/travel
The advice covers several aspects, whether its driving in severe weather, preparing for long journeys, preparing your car for winter and travelling in heavy snow and ice.
One observation from me is that us older drivers used to drive in heavy snow every year. This is less frequent now and we lose the experience and skills of driving in snow. Its always good to refresh our learning. Gone are the winters when I always had a shovel in the boot.
Some very simple suggestions include having warm clothing/rugs in the vehicle (or with you if on a train). Also, making sure you have refreshments.
I feel the website is well worth a read.
