DOG WASTE and BINS

As a dog lover I get really appalled when encountering dog mess, whether on pavements, roads or parkland. There is really no excuse for dog owners not to pick up any mess; it is so easy to do with plastic bags. I feel self conscious that anyone walking past me and my mutt might believe my dog was responsible. However, a lot of people who know me know that I, and my family, do pick up after our dog, Millie (photo posted).

However, when I find dog waste bins filled to overflowing that also infuriates me. I know that one two pint plastic milk bottle was in the bin photographed, but this would still mean lots of plastic bags would not have been able to fit in the bin. This was taken on the Monkspath footpath, between Hay Lane and Frankholmes Drive.

I took this photograph yesterday (26 March) after seeing it whilst walking Millie. It was reported to Solihull Contact Centre and I shall be walking past the same bin later today to ensure waste has been collected. I have asked how often the bins are supposed to be emptied and will report back when I find out. On the positive side though, it shows that responsible dog owners are using the bin.

Why do we have this situation where there is only a dog waste bin in the first place? I’m sure that many people will put their rubbish or dog waste into the first bin they come to regardless of it’s designation. Could we not just replace them with normal waste bins? They are often sited in places where a waste bin would be useful anyway.
