I have been a governor at schools in Solihull for over 25 years (Monkspath and the Federated Special Schools of Forest Oak and Merstone). I know the apprenticeship levy has affected maintained schools.
I fully support some sort of levy to encourage more businesses, local government and schools to employ apprentices but do feel schools, that do not directly have a employ wage bill of over £3m should not have been included in the levy (as all maintained school staff are employed by the local authority they have to make the contribution to the levy). I also felt that as governors at Forest Oak and Merstone had actually employed two apprentices we were being unfairly punished.
I therefore contacted Caroline Spelman, our Meriden constituency MP, who in turn contacted the Secretary of State for an explanation for my question. This is attached. Apprentice Levy response
If this means more schools ’employ’ apprentices then this will be worth it. There are opportunities schools can give to school leavers who need some sort of work experience to add to their CV’s.
