As Cabinet Member Environment and Highways I have regular decision making sessions (CDS). This week saw the first one of 2020 and the agenda before me can be found via this link: http://eservices.solihull.gov.uk/mgInternet/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=652&MId=7914
Agenda item 6 relates to parking in general but there was a formal request to reinstate the two hour free parking in Knowle car parks. This had been reduced from three hours to one hour in 2018.
I did agree with this request and the basis of my reasoning is set out in the short statement I read out at the start of the session. This can be read below.
The decline in out High Streets has many reasons and it not wholly down to car parking charges. It is though one factor and I hope the measures I have put in place, both in Shirley (at my July CDS) and Knowle can help local traders.
I look forward myself to popping down and not worry that I’ve got to cram everything into one hour. It isn’t all about the money -it is also about principle and the hassle of having to pay a charge, albeit a small one.
Thanks for the following for their respectful representations in this matter:
Cllr Alan Reberio, Cllrs Mrs Diana Holl-Allen, Saqib Bhatti MP, David Pinwell, Visit Knowle and the Knowle Society. I hope you feel we have listened.
