WIDNEY MANOR GOLF CLUB – Call for Sites

I have mentioned this in a previous post but feel it necessary to come back to you with a few concerns I have and ask if you agree with me.

Call for Sites reference CFS/24/299 refers to ‘Solihull Golf Club’ but we know it as Widney Manor Golf club. The site has been put forward for consideration for development of housing, storage, commercial, distribution and retail. Because of what is underneath much of the site (the old Hay Lane tip), it is obvious that area can not be developed and would form part of the public realm (parkland if the site is eventually developed).

I presume the site is being promoted by a developer and can envisage that part of the golf course near to Fore Business Park (Stratford Road end) could be where the commercial buildings could be built – and extension of Fore Business Park. This itself could cause issues to properties in the Elmbridge Drive/Charlsworth Avenue area. With the housing element near the current clubhouse area.

One other aspect that I am concerned about, and would like your views as well, is that any access could surely only be via Saintbury Drive, the current access to the golf club and the leisure centre.

I have posted here a letter I sent to the councils Group Manager for Growth & Development, asking for the site not to be considered.

We know that this area of Widney Lane gets congested, certainly at peak periods and the pressure on the junction at Widney Manor Road is considerable (I will deal with that in a future post.

My personal feeling is that this site is not suitable for any development and that if the golf club does wish to vacate the land, which is leases from several owners, including the council, then the site could better meet the needs for residents of Monkspath and Hillfield by establishing it as parkland for leisure use.

I have attached a map showing the location and the full submitted report can be found by visiting this link: Local Plan Call for Sites 2024 Public and entering reference number CFS/24/299 .

  1. Indeed , I concur with you. This development would undoubtedly pose a significant challenge to the local residents. The presence of a nearby station does not necessarily imply a reduction in vehicular traffic

  2. Hi Kenneth, yes totally agree with you! We live on Charlesworth and paid a premium for buying a house that looked onto the open space of the golf course rather than looking onto other houses so yes this would be a big concern for us.
