Community Safety update – Solihull

The councils Stronger Communities and Neighbourhood Services Scrutiny Board has its ‘Annual Community Safety Partnership Key Priorities Update’ before them next week.

The key priorities include:

  • Protecting People from Harm: Ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals within the community.
  • Reducing Offending and Reoffending: Implementing strategies to decrease crime rates and reduce recidivism.
  • Supporting Victims: Providing assistance and resources to those affected by crime and disorder.
  • Preventing Serious Violence: Addressing and mitigating the risk of violent crime.
  • Addressing Substance Misuse: Combating the use of drugs and alcohol to reduce crime and disorder.
  • Community Engagement

The papers for the meeting includes a full breakdown for each priority and can be read via this link (agenda item 6): Agenda for Stronger Communities and Neighbourhood Services Scrutiny Board on Tuesday 10th November 2026, 6.00 pm | Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council

I wish to focus on  the ‘Road Safety’ report, where the partnership includes Council Officers, myself, Fire & Rescue Service, West Midlands Police and the Combined Authority.  The report for this priority can be read here: https://democracy.solihull.gov.uk/documents/s138444/8%20Road%20Safety_Solihull%20Crime%20and%20Disorder%20Panel_20261110.pdf . I have though posted a screenshot of the three pages. The target for the partnership is to reduce the average number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads by 2030. The report details where we are with that target.

The report highlights: that many traditional engineering solutions and “quick wins” have already been implemented, making further casualty reductions increasingly challenging

There is also continued overrepresentation of key risk groups:

  • Child pedestrians aged 10-15.
  • Male cyclists aged 30-60.
  • Young male motorcyclists aged 16-29.
  • Young male drivers aged 17-29.

I hope this post helps to inform residents about the work that is being undertaken and the rationale for this work.
